In a surprising twist of events, the current World Champion decided to sign for Horspath Hammers for the 2020 season. Ben Mould had an unbelievable year in 2019 winning the most precious title of them all – the world crown, back in the summer at Leszno, Poland
The achievement, seemed impossible for anybody outside of Poland, had made him the hottest property in Cycle Speedway. Many compared his last year from to that of the former champion, Joel Chadwick from Australia. He has dominated the domestic season and finished it off in Poland. The Welshman was heavily rumoured to join Birmingham this season, as his time at Poole looked to be ending. His decision will surprise many, as it did some of the Oxfordshire based club members. Lukasz Nowacki is the club’s capitain and knew very little about the transfer until he received a message from Ben himself a couple of days ago.
– I was shocked to find out that Ben is signing for us this year. Winter season is very specific in our sport. People tend to switch off and not much is happening until the new year. I had a random message from Ben hinting that we might be in the same team this year. I am delighted to have him in our club, this is the missing link that we need to make that last step to push for titles. We were often one rider short, losing some matches by couple of points. It shows what a rider of Ben’s caliber means to a club if you look at Poole’s achievements over the last couple of years that he rode for them. They have pretty much cleaned up the South West regional league and went on to win the Play Offs and the Nationals. I think this is going to be our year!
The club is hosting the British Open Final this year which could be a decisive factor for Ben to make a switch. That way he will get much needed practice on his new home track in hopes to win the white shirt for a second time in his career. There are also World Championships in Australia at the end of the year to look forward to, so this is a crucial year for the club and their new signing.
